Cause You Had a Bad Day

Have you had a bad day or maybe even a bad month? Did last night’s game not end how you wanted or was there a test you needed to get a good grade on but didn’t? Is home not feeling like home? Is your go-to person a complete stranger now? Is something just, not right?

Then it gets worse. You feel like the world is telling you, “Don’t cry. Be strong. It’ll all be ok.”

Here is some news: it is ok to not be ok. It’s ok to be angry, afraid, confused, sad, goofy, need space... it’s ok to not be ok.

1) Nothing Will Stop God’s Love:

First (and most importantly) nothing will stop God from loving you. (Check out Romans 8:31-39.) Nothing- not danger or troubles or worries or or even our own selves- can separate us from the love of God. If God gave His own Son for us, we can firmly believe He would do anything for us.

2) False Fillers:

Secondly, God tells us to rejoice in Him. (See Philippians 4:4) This may seem to contradict what I just said. “Isn’t God telling us to ‘just get over it’ like everyone else?” you may question. I used to think that too. But look closely at what the verse says. “…In the Lord.” God isn’t saying, “It will be ok… just get over it.” He is inviting you to be with Him. Jesus is choosing to be with you through it all- whatever it may be.

Let me give you a personal example. Seven years ago, I lost my best friend, and it still brings me to tears. To this day, I still have weeks I feel such anger or other weeks I feel so depressed. I end up so confused.

What gets me out of my funk? Some days it's running or baking. Other days it could be music or a good book. These things are “fillers.”

Maybe you do the same thing (or different things, like video games or drama or movies). Your “fillers” are your escape. But here’s the thing: ultimately, they won’t help. Don’t get me wrong. I love spending all day reading a good book or stuffing my face with chocolate chunk ice cream as much as the next guy. But all these “fillers” can’t love you back. These things that help you escape your feelings will not fill that hole in your heart.

3) The True Filler:

This takes me back to the “rejoicing in the Lord.” You were created to be with God. You were meant to live all of life (even the difficult parts) with Him! And you know that hole you feel? That’s meant to be filled by an awesome God! God doesn’t ignore what we are going through or say, “Buck up and get over it.” God comes to be with us,  which we see in Jesus.

After telling us He is with us, He gives us this promise. In Romans 8:18, God tells us, “Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal to us later.”
